Outline
Internet Packet Data Service provides users with a fast connection from Inmarsat to the Internet at a maximum speed of 64kbps.This service is available from Inmarsat-Fleet marine terminals (planned launch in December 2002) and Inmarsat-M4 mobile terminals.
This method of communication splits data (information) into small units called "packets", attaches a header containing the address and control information to each packet and then transmits the data to the destination where it is reassembled. Because charges are based on the quantity of information and not the connection time length, users can maintain Internet connection without worrying about extra charges when data is not being transmitted or received.

No ISP subscription necessary for Internet connection!
Unlike other methods of Internet web access, this service does not require users to subscribe to an ISP. Charging only the packet communication cost, this convenient Internet access service is available in all ocean regions covered by an Inmarsat satellite.

Internet Access Free from Worries about the Time Length of Your Connection!
Multiple users can share access [1] via the single access circuit, each sending and receiving data over the same connection. Because the charges are based on the volume of transmitted and received data, it is possible to maintain a connection to the Internet [2] without worrying about the time length of connection.

E-mail Capability!
Users can use this service to send and receive mail via their regular e-mail account [3]. Because there are no worries about the connection time, it is possible to stay connected while taking care of your e-mail correspondence. Even checking accounts costs next to nothing if no mail is sent or received.

[1]  Because "best effort" policy is applied in the case of multiple terminals sharing a 64kbps circuit, there is no guarantee regarding the transmission speed.
[2]  Other communications services will be unavailable while maintaining an active connection via Inmarsat Packet Data Service.
[3]  Depending on the mail service provider, it may not be possible to send or receive mail via this Internet connection. Please check with your provider!
