Disaster Preparation

As a telecommunications operator in charge of social infrastructure, KDDI's social mission is to provide stable services, even in the event of a large-scale disaster. KDDI is applying the lessons learned from our experience in the Great East Japan Earthquake in building networks that can withstand natural disasters, and we are making efforts to ensure we can be of service to customers when disasters strike.

Disaster Response Training

Conducting Disaster Response Training

KDDI is strengthening disaster response training throughout Japan, so as to offer stable service even in the event of a potential large-scale natural disaster. In February 2012 we conducted training based on a hypothetical magnitude 7 earthquake with an epicenter directly below the northern part of Tokyo Bay.
More than 100 directors and employees, including the president, participated in this training, which employed the "blind method" by which the damage situation and training content are not revealed until just prior to execution. This provided a training environment in which matters such as confirming employee safety and ensuring telecommunications services were executed as they would be during an actual disaster.

Vehicle-Mounted Base Station Skill Contest

KDDI holds "Vehicle-Mounted Base Station Skill Contests" in which contestants are judged on how they handle the process of setting up and initiating operation of vehicle-mounted base stations. The objective of these contests is to provide training to improve operational techniques so that the setting up of mobile power supply cars and vehicle-mounted base stations can be handled safely and promptly.
Four four-person teams-one each from Sendai, Koyama, Nagoya, and Hiroshima-were selected from among KDDI's 13 operation division technical centers throughout Japan for the contest held in December 2011. The competition involved base setup skills, such as preparing a vehicle-mounted base station, transporting it, placement, securing the satellite connection, fixing the antenna, setting the wireless device, assembly, etc.
KDDI is continuing to conduct disaster preparation training to ensure stable service provision under any conditions.
