KDDI Labs Pilots IPv6 Network between Japan and the U.S.
—Network to Enable Extensive Research and Testing


PALO ALTO, CA, June 24, 2003—KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc., KDDI Labs USA, Inc., and KDDI Corporation today announced the deployment of an IPv6 trial network [1] between KDDI Laboratories Japan and U.S. locations, in cooperation with the WIDE Project managed by Prof. Jun Murai [2]. The project is aimed at promoting IPv6 R&D activities both in the U.S. and Japan, and will last until March 2004. The launch of the following three initial R&D activities was also announced.

R&D activities over the IPv6 trial network:

IPv6 Applications—developed by KDDI Labs such as "QualityMeeting" [3], a realtime interactive video communication system, and "VAST-ip" [4], a fast and full-featured content transmission system, will be tested. Transmission quality and its control schemes in cases of delay and transmission error due to a long-haul overseas connection are to be researched and evaluated.

An IPv6 Portal System [5]—provided through KDDI's current Internet service (DION) IPv6 field trial, is to be used for conducting tests involving KDDI Labs USA employees, in order to assess the convenience of the portal for overseas business travelers and the contribution of IPv6 towards ubiquitous computing.

IPv4-IPv6 Connectivity—Automatic tunneling gateways called "6to4 Relay Routers" [6] are deployed at KDDI's data centers both in Japan and the U.S., providing an environment in which research and academic institutions can easily interconnect from IPv4 to IPv6. Currently there are approximately ten open 6to4 Relay Routers globally and one in Japan, including the systems provided by KDDI Labs. KDDI Labs is the first institution to provide this IPv4-IPv6 connectivity both in Japan and the U.S. Future plans include research and assessment of the decentralization of the 6to4 Relay Routers and the optimization of routing control between the two countries.

In addition to the research activities above, KDDI R&D Labs, KDDI Labs USA, and KDDI Corp. plan to facilitate research on IPv6 networks and practical applications, based on this trial network, through partnerships with U.S. universities and research institutions. The promotion of joint research on grid computing via HDTV/IPv6 in conjunction with Osaka University and UC San Diego is also planned [7].

Realtime Interactive Video Communication System—QualityMeeting—
QualityMeeting is a two-way audio/video live transmission system, which can transmit VGA-quality video and CD-quality audio over a broadband IPv4/v6 network. Even over the Internet in which any QoS control is not supported, QualityMeeting can transmit streams smoothly, suppressing/compensating packet errors by using KDDI's proprietary methods- Bandwidth Adaptive Rate Control (BARC) and Audio Video Error Concealment (AVEC)

Fast and Full-featured Content Transmission System—VAST-ip—
VAST-ip enables stable, high quality video transmission over low cost IP networks. The system provides advanced functionality such as interruption/resumption of transmission and movie playback during the receipt of movie files, as well as MPEG coding/decoding capabilities.

IPv6 Portal System
KDDI is conducting a field trial of IPv6 over ADSL with its "DION" Internet service users. In this trial, KDDI is providing an experimental system called "iemon", a portal system that provides IPv6 equipment hostname registration, a portal for access to a user's IPv6 equipment, and IPv4/IPv6 translation.

6to4 Relay Router
A 6to4 Relay Router enables users employing the automatic tunneling mechanism "6to4" to connect to the IPv6 Internet. This 6to4 Relay Router is made publicly available, in a sense that users who have a global IPv4 address can use this Relay Router to connect to the IPv6 Internet. KDDI R&D Labs launched the first 6to4 Relay Router in Japan with cooperation of the WIDE project.
