KDDI Announces Fee Reductions for GLOBAL PASSPORT International Roaming Service, and Expansion of Service Area to Include Thailand and Taiwan

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular Telephone will reduce communications fees for GLOBAL PASSPORT—an international roaming service that enables au mobile phones to be used in Japan as well as overseas—by up to 53% effective August 1. The reductions will benefit domestic calls within each country or region of destination, as well as international calls from those countries or regions back to Japan.
In addition, GLOBAL PASSPORT is scheduled to launch in Thailand in cooperation with the Communication Authority of Thailand (CAT) on August 8, and in Taiwan with Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communications Inc. (APBW), a mobile service operator, as soon as preparations are completed.
This service allows users to use at overseas travel destinations au mobile phones they use in Japan without changing their phone numbers.
Currently the GLOBAL PASSPORT service is provided with eight operators, including SK Telecom (Korea), Hutchison Telecom (Hong Kong), Verizon Wireless (U.S. including Hawaii), Guamcell (Guam and Saipan), Telstra (Australia), Telus Mobility (Canada), Telecom Mobile (New Zealand), and China Unicom (China).
KDDI is also in the process of launching a roaming service with CDMA operators in each country, which will further expand the service area for au mobile phones in the future.
