Hutchinson CAT Awards Global Positioning System (gpsOne™) Construction Contract to KDDI

2003/09/02

Tokyo, Japan (Sept. 2, 2003)—KDDI has announced a contract with Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia Ltd. (head office: Bangkok, Thailand, CEO: Mr. Stephen Sun), a leading cellular phone carrier in Thailand, for the construction of a high-precision global positioning system (GPS). The contract is based on the gpsOne™ system which KDDI presently offers in Japan in cooperation with NEC (head office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; CEO: Akinobu Kanesugi) as EZ NAVI, and is worth a total of approximately 1 billion yen.

In constructing the new system, KDDI will cooperate with Snap Track, Inc. (head office: Campbell, USA; General Manager: Dr. Kamil Grajski), regarding the gpsOne™ system license and technological support. KDDI will also receive cooperation from Qualcomm, Inc. (head office: San Diego, USA; CEO: Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs) relating to the technological support associated with the CDMA system.

KDDI has been providing a commercial gpsOne™ global positioning system service since the end of 2001, and was the first company in the industry to introduce such a service. On this new occasion, as part of the development of the company's new solutions business, KDDI will provide the support to Hutchison CAT for the provision of the cellular phone—based global positioning service utilizing KDDI know—how as the leading cellular phone carrier regarding the same type of global positioning service in Japan.

Support will include:

(1)  System development relating to the gpsOne™ server, etc.
(2)  Introduction of a manufacturer of cellular phone handsets that are compatible with this system.
(3)  Provision of technological and marketing information.
(4)  Introduction of an application service provider and content provider, etc.

Going forward, KDDI will continue to actively propose various solutions, beginning with the gpsOne™ type global positioning system service employing cellular phones, to other foreign CDMA telecom carriers.
