KDDI will begin offering 'Keitai Office', a remote access service that enables users to access the corporate intranet from their au handsets, browse shared address books, send and receive emails, and manage their schedules when they are out of the office. The service will utilize BREW™, the wireless application platform.
'Keitai Office' offers businesses a service which will not require any new equipment or the creation of new firewalls. The software is simply installed at the PC level. In addition, 'Keitai Office' will be provided on an ASP [1] basis, so fees can remain low.
The new service is designed on BREW, the wireless application platform which is built into au mobile phones. As a result, BREW technology will enable the service to offer features not found in other remote access browser-based services built on Java or otherwise.
'Keitai Office' can store and synchronize a large quantity of data, quickly view and edit email messages, and confirm schedules. 'Keitai Office' starts and displays quickly, and achieves an intuitive and absolutely fluid access environment.
For communicating with the intranet, 'Keitai Office' automatically chooses a communication protocol that best fits the application, so traffic volume is reduced to minimum, and communications fees are minimized. 'Keitai Office' also offers guaranteed security, as it uses the latest encryption technology, and all data is stored on the client side.
For sending and receiving e-mail, customers may use any account with a corporate address that they have set up. In addition, they can attach various files inside their company folders to the emails and send them.
For updating and confirming schedules, customers may use the groupware they currently use, including Notes/Domino, MS Exchange, Cybozu, or MS Outlook, to check and update schedule information. (At launch, the service will support Notes/Domino R6, and subsequently support Notes/Domino R5, Cybozu, MS Exchange 5.5/2000, and any IMAP/POP mail-server).
Standard service fees include a set up fee of 10,000 yen per contract. Monthly basic fees are set at 500 yen per handset. In addition to the standard service, optional services including a PC package, a groupware package, user setup, and 24 hour on-site support. The optional service fees will be announced later.
Service launch is planned for November 25, 2003.
