2004/03/16

Tokyo, March 16, 2004—KDDI and Okinawa Cellular are pleased to announce that the total subscription number to their 3G service exceeded 13 million on March 12, 2004. CDMA 1X compliant au handsets were launched on April 1, 2002. In November 2003, KDDI added CDMA 1X WIN, a service that enables users to enjoy e-mail and EZweb on a fixed monthly fee.

CDMA 1X achieved a comfortable mobile internet environment through high-speed data communications at speeds of up to 144kbps. The technology enables applications of the Internet connection service EZweb and various other provider connections with a maximum downstream speed of 144kbps and a maximum upstream speed of 64kbps.

CDMA 1X WIN, based on the CDMA 1x network, enables high speed data communications of up to 2.4Mbps, and allows the popular 3G EZweb services EZMovie and EZ Chaku Uta™. In addition, the service hosts a series of rich services dedicated to CDMA 1X WIN, including EZChannel, an innovative service that automatically distributes various genres of program, and Live Camera, a service that delivers desired video content in real time.

EZ Flat, the first fixed packet communications service rate plan to have been introduced in the industry, enable users of EZweb services, including email, to unlimited usage for a fixed monthly charge of 4,200 yen.

CDMA 1X subscriptions reached 1 million by June 2002, 2 months after launch, 5 million in January 2003, 10 million in September 2003.
