KDDI to Improve Customer Identity Checks for Sales of CDMA Prepaid Handsets

No. 2004-074

KDDI Corporation
Okinawa Cellular
2004/05/11
|

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular have announced a change in the method of verifying personal details when selling CDMA prepaid exclusive cellular phones in the case of au handsets. Previously, the sales outlet received the application, and opened the account when checking the customer's personal details. However, to ensure that the identity of the customer is checked even more thoroughly, from August 2004, in addition to checking personal details at sales outlets, if customer data (such as name, address, contact phone number, personal or corporate account) is not registered on KDDI's system, the account will not be opened.
In the case of au handsets, KDDI checked the identity of customers at sales outlets when selling prepaid cellular phones from summer 2000, but as crimes involving the illicit use of prepaid handsets subsequently occurred on frequent occasions, it has become necessary to further strengthen identity checks.
