KDDI Launches EZ Chaku-uta Full™
CDMA 1X WIN Mobile Music Distribution/Download Service

No. 2004-188

KDDI Corporation
Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company

2004/10/13

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular are pleased to announce EZ Chaku-uta Full™, a new CDMA 1X WIN service scheduled for launch in November 2004. This is the first music distribution software for mobile telephones [1] that allows users to download an artist's song in its entirety.

EZ Chaku-uta Full™ can be used with a maximum of 2.4Mbps transmission speed and the fixed packet transmission charge service "Double Flat" without stress or any worry of packet transmission charges. The downloaded music can be replayed on the mobile phone's stereo speakers, and can also be hooked up to external headphones and stereo speakers. The music quality ensures the user's complete enjoyment. In addition, songs designated in advance by the contents provider [2] can also be used as a high-quality stereo version of Chaku-uta® [3].

The service charge per song will generally be several hunderd yen [4], and users will be able to download about 10,000 songs from six web sites covering a wide range of music from popular music to indies. The web sites offering this downloadable music and the range of music available will be gradually expanded.

au surpassed the industry with the EZ Chaku-uta® service, which allows users to download artist's music without alterations. This service has seen more than 120 million downloads as of this point [5], testifying to the service's success in providing users a way to enjoy music with mobile phones. The new EZ Chaku-uta Full™ allows users to easily download new music anytime and anywhere.

Also, in tandem with EZ Chaku-uta Full™, the newly established music portal site EZ Music! introduces search functions in coordination with EZ Chaku-uta Full™, EZ Chaku-uta® and au Records' on-line CD sales. The "Now On-Air Information" function, which enables users to check the programming and music currently playing on EZ FM and EZ FM On-Air Check Appli, can also be used to search EZ Chaku-uta Full™ for the music being broadcast. A download function has been added to further enhance users' enjoyment of the music.

In addition, the new line-up of CDMA 1X WIN includes four models with stereo speakers, large-capacity data folders and compatibility with an external memory enabling copyrighted data to be saved to ensure capacity for saving music from EZ Chaku-uta Full™. These four models—W21CA (manufactured by Casio Computer Co., Ltd.), W21T (Toshiba Corporation), W22SA (Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.) and W22H (Hitachi, Ltd.) —will be released sequentially in late November 2004.

The four new models are compatible with EZ Navi Walk and large-capacity EZ Appli (BREW®) [6], and also boast a large-screen QVGA EZ Movie [7] that makes full use of the QVGA LCD (320 X 240 pixels) as well as EZ Chaku-uta® (high-quality stereo version) [8] with the same sound quality as EZ Chaku-uta Full™.

The wide array of functions that these four models are equipped with include PC Site Viewer, which gives users access to web sites typically viewed only on personal computers, and full-scale 3D games that can be played on mobile phones' LCD screen and TV screens.
