KDDI Announces 4th au design project Model PENCK, Loaded with Advanced CDMA 1X WIN Features

KDDI Corporation
Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company

2005/02/07

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular have announced a late February release of the PENCK, a CDMA 1X WIN mobile handset designed by Makoto Saito, a world famous graphic designer and art director. Given by Saito, the name PENCK extends the image of being cute and free.

The fourth model in the au design project series of mobile phones, the PENCK is designed using the latest molding technique to achieve an oval shape with no bulges. The unique form allows the buttons and the camera to be smoothly integrated into the body, suggesting a uniquely distinct presence.

The PENCK is available in three colors, metal, milk (white), and bitter (black) which faithfully projects the image of the handset intended by the designer. In metal color, the built-in antenna does not affect the phone's radio sensitivity as the surface of the handset is thoroughly plated using plating vapor deposition, the first time the coloring technology has been applied to mobile phones.

Another industry first is a white AC adapter. The cradle and stereo earphones are uniformly colored in white.

Design uniformity is also maintained screen images designed by Makoto Saito Design Office Inc., including boot screen, standby screen, menu screen, and various animations. The images are richly expressed using Flash® [1].

Under the direction of Saito, brand new ring tones and sound effects were created for the PENCK, enabling users to enjoy exclusive sounds that match the overwhelmingly unique form.

The PENCK comes with 3D surround stereo speakers for high-fidelity reproduction of EZ Chaku-uta Full™ [2] sounds. It not only supports EZ NaviWalk and barcode (QR code) capabilities, but comes with advanced CDMA 1X WIN features, including a 2.2-inch QVGA LCD screen, 1.24-megapixel CCD camera and Secure compliant miniSD memory slot.
