KDDI Announces One Million au Global Roaming-enabled GLOBAL PASSPORT Handsets Now in Use

KDDI Corporation
Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company

2005/02/08

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular today announced that the number of au handsets in use supporting the GLOBAL PASSPORT international roaming service reached one million as of February 4. The service allows users to use GLOBAL PASSPORT-compliant handsets both at home and overseas, requiring neither application nor optional fees. In April 2000, the companies became the first mobile carriers in Japan to offer an international roaming service which uses the same system for both domestic and international roaming services.

GLOBAL PASSPORT has been deployed in 15 countries and regions, including China, South Korea, the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia. The service areas account for 75% of the overseas destinations of the Japanese traveling abroad, according to the Ministry of Justice.

KDDI will continue to expand au mobile phone service areas overseas by partnering with CDMA mobile carriers in other countries.
