KDDI and KDDI R&D Laboratories Develop 'Check the Harajuku Gao!' Entertainment System Utilizing Face Recognition Technology

KDDI Corporation and KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc. are pleased to announce that the companies have developed the 'Check the Harajuku Gao!' entertainment system, which quickly detects and analyzes images of faces captured on camera and determines which job category it matches from among the leading-edge jobs flourishing in the Harajuku area. The system can be experienced in the Future Lab of the KDDI Designing Studio, KDDI's corporate communications facility opening in Harajuku in March 2005.
The face recognition technology used in 'Check the Harajuku Gao!' was developed by KDDI R&D Laboratories. Unlike conventional face recognition technology that aims to determine whether a face is a positive match or not, KDDI's technology is capable of determining with flexibility and high accuracy what category a face belongs to, such as gender, age group, and job type. It can also assess to what degree it is a match. 'Check the Harajuku Gao!' uses a job-face image database of younger people working on the frontlines of Harajuku to determine which job category matches a person's image photographed by a camera and the degree of the match.

Matching Job Category Analysis
The system quickly detects and analyzes the face of a person captured on camera and then determines which group of people it matches and to what degree from among different job categories flourishing in Harajuku including hair stylists and musicians. The system displays an analysis result of the three job categories with the highest match from among 12 different job categories available for both men and women.

Using the analysis result, people can find out where in Harajuku others with similar faces are located.
