KDDI Corporation announced today that KDDI, Starcat Cable Network Co., Ltd., and KMN Corporation will begin testing video-on-demand (VOD) and telephone services [1], combining Starcat's cable TV network, KMN's IP technology expertise, and KDDI's Content Delivery Network (CDN) [2]. The tests, aimed at delivering appealing VOD and telephone services to cable TV subscribers, will begin in June 2005. The three companies are also in the process of finalizing details for the commercialization of services in fiscal 2005.
VOD service testing will entail delivering a rich variety of VOD content including movies and animations from KDDI's CDN to the cable TV box in the homes of Starcat cable TV subscribers and testing for connectivity and image quality. For telephone service testing, telephone functions using KDDI's CDN and telephone network will be provided to telephones connected to cable TV lines. Testing will consist of checking connectivity with the cable modem as well as determining compatibility with emergency calls and operational and monitoring methods.

Telephone services using advanced IP telephony technology provide the same level of quality and functionality as NTT telephone services including emergency calls and use of 0AB-J numbers. In addition, NTT subscribers will be able to port their existing telephone numbers to the new service. |
