KDDI to Collaborate on the NPO "Think the Earth Project"

KDDI Corporation
Think the Earth Project
2005/6/3

The KDDI Group is proactively engaged in activities to safeguard the Earth's environment, with the KDDI Environmental Constitution, which took effect in March 2003, as a guideline. These activities include the promotion of Material Recycling - the recycling of used cell-phones as a resource - and energy conservation initiatives, such as the use of solar base stations powered by solar cells. As one aspect of such activities, KDDI is to participate in "Think the Earth Project 011, 'live earth'," a collaborative project with the NPO Think the Earth Project, which will begin in July 2005.

Through Think the Earth Project, based on collaboration between businesses and NPOs, social contributions are made on the theme "Coexistence of Ecology and the Economy," through activities including:

Developing goods and services with a message for the Earth.
Communicating information about the Earth through Web sites, etc.. and
Supporting NPOs and NGOs tackling social and global environmental problems.

KDDI will participate in "Think the Earth Project 011, 'live earth'," using cell-phones, which are familiar to most customers. Based on collaboration from Spaceport Inc., the company promoting Think the Earth Project, and eTEN K.K., the company operating e-Tenki.net, which develops creative weather-related content, KDDI will provide the earth clock application 'live earth' (provider site: live earth; information fee: 105 yen/month). 'live earth' shows the time in each city around the world, plus the night/day dividing line and cloud image data in real time, and will be offered as a preset option on G'zOne TYPE-R handsets and other au cell-phones.
KDDI and "Think the Earth Project 011, 'live earth'," through this collaborative project, will create opportunities for customers to think about the Earth itself and the various problems it faces - notably, environmental problems. A percentage of the information fees obtained through the provision of 'live earth' will be forwarded through Spaceport Inc. as sponsorship funds, which will be used in environmental and social contribution activities to help create a better future for the Earth.
