KDDI to Close VENUS-P International Public Data Communications Service

KDDI will cease offering its VENUS-P International Public Data Communications Service on Friday, March 31, 2006.
VENUS-P commenced service on April 1, 1982, to the US, UK, France, former West Germany, and Spain as a pioneer in international data communications. Based on international standards [1], VENUS-P was a wide-range data transmission service used by corporate and individual customers on everything from mainframes to PCs as a packet exchange system between Japan and overseas.
At its subscription peak in 1999, VENUS-P connected 207 networks in 87 countries. The rapid spread of the Internet and corporate data transmission services such as IP-VPN, however, resulted in a sharp decrease in usage, and KDDI decided to end the service on Friday, March 31, 2006.
KDDI will provide individual VENUS-P customers with an end-of-service schedule, service alternatives, and other support to preclude any inconveniences.

Based on the transmission control procedures for packet exchange systems contained in international standards X.25, X.28, and X.32, data communications ranging from 300bps - 64Kbps are offered via access to a dedicated line, telephone line, DDX-P network, etc. |
