2007/01/09

KDDI Corporation, Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company and Mobaoku Co., Ltd are pleased to announce that the membership in "au Auction", their mobile auction service, exceeded 500,000 at the end December 2006.

"au Auction" started in January 2005 as a free auction service exclusive to mobile phones allowing users to display their products for sale with just their phone cameras, and to check the bidding situation in real time. From July 2005, users were charged 315 yen/month (inclusive of tax) as part of the service's measure to improve security and convenience, following the introductions of a system to compensate sellers for their losses and an application to make product exhibition easier.

In August 2006, "Mobapay" [1], an escrow service that allows users to settle their transactions more safely, was introduced, and later in October, the auction service was extended to PC users. Such service developments were well received by a wide spectrum of users.

In future, au hopes to take advantage of the merits of an auction site directly managed by a mobile phone operator to provide safer and better services for customers.

[1]  "Mobapay" is an escrow transaction service provided by PAYGENT Co., Ltd, a company set up by DeNA Co., Ltd with funding support from The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and The Norinchukin Bank.
