January 28, 2008

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular have announced plans to merge the current names for global roaming services "Global Passport" and "Global Expert" into one service name of "Global Passport", along with rate cuts of up to 61% for voice and 77% for data (packet) communications. The new "Global Passport" service will begin on March 15.

With "Global Passport", services available while GSM roaming (current "Global Expert") will be expanded to include e-mail, EZweb, C-mail, and PC site-viewer data services in addition to voice communication. These services will be available with the first au handset supporting overseas GSM networks, the W62S from Sony-Ericsson Mobile Communications Corp.

Services available while CDMA roaming (current "Global Passport") will also be expanded, adding C-mail and PC site viewer capabilities to the voice, e-mail, EZweb and C-mail receiving functions already available. CDMA 1X WIN handsets supporting these functions are expected to be released from summer 2008.
