KDDI Announces Expansion of GLOBAL PASSPORT CDMA International Roaming Services; Voice Roaming Services Begin in the Bahamas and Data Roaming Services to be Added in Mexico

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular are pleased to announce the July 23 addition of voice roaming services to the Bahamas and data roaming services to Mexico for users of GLOBAL PASSPORT CDMA, the international roaming service offered by KDDI that enables au mobile handsets used in Japan to be used without modification overseas.

Voice communication services will be provided in the Bahamas in cooperation with The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited ('BTC'), a local mobile communications carrier. Service will be available locally within the BTC service area.

Data roaming services, including receiving and sending emails, accessing the Internet, and receiving cmail, will be introduced in Mexico, in addition to the voice communication service s that is presently available, in cooperation with IUSACELL S.A. DE C.V., a local mobile communications carrier.

With these services, customers with compatible models do not need to submit a special application or have a special fee plan, and the au mobile phone number used in Japan can be used overseas as is. With this expansion of services, GLOBAL PASSPORT CDMA voice roaming services will now be available in 25 countries and regions, while data roaming services will now be available in 14 of these countries and regions.

  • * Customers using W63SA, A5527SA, A5514SA, and A5505SA models should update the roaming area information stored in their mobile phones by downloading the overseas carrier PRL (roaming area information) from EZweb and saving the information before leaving Japan.
  • * The PRL (Preferred Roaming List) contains information on roaming areas of overseas partner providers. The latest PRL is necessary for users to roam in an area where a new roaming service is introduced. Users should download and update information stored on their handsets before they leave Japan.
