KDDI to expand functions
at KDDI Data Centers 'dotsquare'

Tokyo, May, 30 -KDDI announced it will expand the functions of its 'dotsquare' data centers from June 1, creating more platforms to support customers' e-business needs.

From October 2000, the 'dotsquare' brand, the core of KDDI's Internet Protocol business development, has offered users such basic services as co-location and hosting, as well as advanced operational services including application services, streaming, and e-business support services such as 'PayCounter', a gateway settlement service. From July, in collaboration with Hitachi and Hitachi Net Business, KDDI will begin a managed storage service.

Now, by further expanding the dotsquare service, KDDI will offer 'Cage Collection Service', 'Active Monitoring Service' and 'Data Center Ethernet Service' to meet the needs of customers. In addition, KDDI will also expand the currently utilized space at its sites in Odaiba.

1. Cage co-location
To strengthen security for the co-location service, KDDI will provide private caged racks, in addition to the currently offered open space and racks. This will begin with the Odaiba sites and will be extended to other sites.

2. Active Monitoring Service
Active monitoring will be added to the Advanced Operational Service currently available. The service includes:

1. PING Monitoring - Monitoring how customer machines are operating, by using PING commands1.
2. Service Monitoring - Monitoring customer servers by accessing the TCP port2
3. Traffic Report - confirming the traffic on customers' network machines on the web using MRTG3.

These services will initially be implemented at the Odaiba facility and gradually extended to other sites. It will be possible to outsource customer machine operations using this 'Active Monitoring Service' in tandem with the already available service.

*1 PING Command: A command that confirms the status of machines on a network. PING confirms whether targeted machines are able to communicate on IP level.
*2 TCP Port: ports individually provided for services on the TCP/IP Network.
*3 MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher): Free software that graphs network traffic.

Prices for Active Monitoring Service:
1) Monthly fee schedule

Contents Monthly Fee Additional Fees
Basic Fee Price per LAN to be monitored (per one port connection to the monitoring system) 10,000 yen -
PING Monitoring Monitoring operations with the PING command 10,000 yen per 5 ports 2000 yen per port
Service Monitoring Access TCP port and monitor the server's service operation 20,000 per machine -
Traffic Report Web confirmation on traffic of network machines by MRTG 5000 yen per port -

Basic engineering fee per LAN to be monitored: 50,000 yen

3. Data Center Ethernet Communication Service
For customers using the 'dotsquare' co-location service, KDDI will offer a high speed LAN environment for connecting to other KDDI sites. There are three ports available: 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps, that will connect sites in Otemachi, Shinjuku and Odaiba. Registering for the three sites will not only enable point-to-point communication, but will also facilitate integrated mesh communication.

By using the ethernet data center service ISP/ASP related customers will be able to access Otemachi IX site directly, with a low-priced, high speed. Using this service will also enable users to diversify line use, and construct simple backup sites.

Prices for the ethernet data center communication service
1) Monthly Fees
Product Name Interface Port Price Data circuit terminating equipment fee
10Mbps 10base-T 100,000 4,000
100Mbps 100base-TX 150,000 4,000
1Gbps 1000base-SX 550,000 -
Additional charges apply for setup engineering and cable setup within a co-location site.

KDDI will be expanding the current operating space of 2,200 square meters to 2,400 square meters within the Telecom Center in Odaiba. This will make the total 'dotsquare' site space 130,000 square meters, which is comprised of 28 sites in 13 cities in Japan (40,000 square meters), and 17 sites in 12 cities overseas (90,000 square meters).
