KDDI to Launch Japan's First Account Settlement Mobile Commerce Service.
10,000 people to participate in trials prior to actual commercialization in Spring 2002.
--Module combines three installed authentication methods--

Tokyo, August 27, 2001 - KDDI, icePAY Japan, e-Bank, ITOCHU Techno-Science, Woori Technology Inc. and PROSEED are pleased to announce that from spring 2002 they will start 'icePAY' (internet certificate payment), a total support service for internet bank settlement services linked to mobile commerce. Some 10,000 customers will be asked to test the service ahead of full-scale commercialization in what will be Japan's largest test of mobile commerce services.

icePAY uses an algorithm cipher developed by Woori Technology of Korea. Users attach an icePAY module to their mobile phone to give them usability and security for a new genre of mobile commerce. The user connects to the icePAY portal site, which is on KDDI's mobile phone internet service (EZweb), and give their unique identification. They then can enjoy net shopping in tandem with their e-Bank bank account and can even pay at the actual store counter. Additionally it is also possible to conduct money exchange between users subscribing to e-Bank, simply by using email addresses between the mobile phones and the various mobile banking systems.

The plan to conduct settlement of net shopping transactions as well as those at actual shops on exactly the same mobile settlement environment is a first for Japan. A strict security level is adhered to by setting an individual "4 digit optional mobile phone identification number", a "changeable number", which is created by algorithm within the module, and the "PIN number" set by user. This 3-way system ensures that security is always extremely high.

Woori Technology and PROSEED have jointly established icePAY Japan in readiness for the trials. icePAY Japan will take charge of all arrangements for the commercialization of the service, including preparation of offices in to supervise the trials.

The trial will involve various product and service providing industries such as food, everyday supplies, tickets, information, travel, regional specialties, taxi companies and more, and will be provided to 10,000 participants. The participants in the trial will be comprised of 10,000 general participants, with membership holders and employees of the participating companies also permitted to take part. The trial already has 17 participating companies, with that number set to increase by September. The trial itself is scheduled to run from November 2001 until January 2002, and will cover all of Japan.

This process is intended to assist in assessing user evaluations as well as marketing effectiveness. The analysis will be processed by Net Ratings, Japan's largest Internet user research company. This type of research will be the first of its kind conducted in Japan, in the sense that it will measure Internet usage rates and purchasing action analysis. After conducting the experiment, the service will begin full-scale commercialization from spring of 2002. 100 million modules are expected to be distributed in the first year with figures to reach 500 million in three-years time.
