KDDI to Strengthen Defenses Against Cellular Phone Spam Email

Tokyo, September 26, 2001 -- KDDI Corp. and the wireless au group will from the end of December, launch a protection system to protect users of its c-mail wireless text messaging service against spam e-mail.

A part of the security plan will be to halt the function on c-mail that allows users to receive e-mail sent over the internet as a text message to a previously arranged e-mail address. This will prevent people from sending spam e-mail from computers to e-mail addresses used by c-mail.

* e-mail receiving addresses are 090XXXXXXXX@cmail.ido.ne.jp for the Kanto, Chubu areas, and 090XXXXXXXX@ct.dion.ne.jp for all other areas. (where differs from place to place)

* If customers have above the addresses as notification address for emails that are received over the EZweb wireless internet service, (users whose email is received on EZweb are notified through c-mail) they can keep using the service.

* Following the start of the security plan, the Internet Assist and EVmail optional services which notify incoming emails will also finish operating.

KDDI already offers the following protection on the EZweb internet service for au cellular phone users.
1. Users can customize e-mail addresses.
(20 characters or less +@ezweb.ne.jp)
2. Users can select 20 e-mail addresses that to be rejected
3. Users can receive only the sender's name and the mail subject and then can select e-mail they only want to read.
