KDDI, Japan Mayday Develop "HELPNET Keitai," an
Emergency Notification Service for Cell Phones

Confirms user location in emergencies and notifies authorities

Tokyo, May 9, 2002 - KDDI Corporation and Japan Mayday Service Co., Ltd., announced the joint development of HELPNET Keitai, an emergency notification service that uses the GPS Keitai cell phone location service operated by au.

The service can ascertain a user's position and connect to police, fire departments and other emergency services. It will begin nationwide on June 7, 2002. All types of au cell phones with GPS navigation functions can be used.

People are becoming more concerned with their security and safety from external threats due to the rise in the number of crimes recently and the terrorist attacks in the U.S. in 2001. People are also finding it necessary to grapple with internal forces such as unexpected, sudden illness due to overwork and stress. Given these social conditions, Japan Mayday Service created the HELPNET Keitai system to provide affordable contact services using a cellular telephone in various emergency situations that might occur in daily routines.

Knowledge gained in developing "HELPNET," an emergency notification service that began services in September 2000 with the objective of facilitating fast assistance in roadside emergencies, was utilized as much as possible in creating this new service.

The HELPNET Keitai's allow users easily to notify authorities in emergencies even when they may be distressed or in an unfamiliar place. The HELPNET operation center ascertains location information and data such as name, age and gender recorded upon registration. The operator accurately directs the call to the fire department (119) in case of sudden illness or injury or to the police (110) or Japan Coast Guard (118) in case of accidents and other incidents, notifying the emergency service organization with jurisdiction in the user's current location. The service also provides information about medical services open at night and on holidays. It will refer users to the closest medical facility as well as roadside services including emergency onsite repair and towing for vehicle breakdowns.

HELPNET Keitai is a service that offers reassurance for the unexpected in everyday life.
