Tokyo, May 9, 2002 -- KDDI Corporation and Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company announced that total users of their GPS Keitai and Movie Keitai service rose to more than one million subscribers as of April 30, 2002, to a total of 1.02 million users.

Handsets for au's GPS Keitai and Movie Keitai services were released on December 1, 2001 and it took less than five months for the services to achieve a subscriber base of more than one million.

The GPS Keitai is Japan's first mobile phone to be integrated with EZnavigation, a highly precise location information system that uses signals from global positioning system (GPS) satellites. In addition to the GPS location information system, the Movie Keitai is integrated with EZmovie, a video distribution service that allows users to enjoy a rich variety of video contents with images and stereo sound.

In December 2001, the Movie Keitai C5001T, GPS Keitai C3001H and C3002K models were released, followed by the GPS Keitai C3003P-equipped with the first electronic compass for cellular phones-in March 2002. After 3G CDMA 2001x services began on April 1, 2002, the GPS Keitai A3011SA and A3013T, which are capable of data transmission at speeds of up to 144kbps, and the camera-equipped GPS Keitai A3012CA were released. Both the GPS Keitai and the Movie Keitai boast a complete and user-friendly lineup.

Within one month of the launch on April 1, some 300,000 CDMA2000 1x handsets (including models other than GPS and Movie Keitai) had been sold, with a total of 344,100 users. The handsets are being well received since 3G handsets can be used nationwide.
