KDDI and Okinawa Cellular to Offer New 3G Services 2GHz Frequency |
Tokyo, May 10, 2002 - In response to increasing demand for data transmission services, KDDI Corp. and Okinawa Cellular said they will start trials in April 2003 of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, an IMT-2000 high-speed third generation wireless data service that operates at a frequency of 2GHz and can transmit data economically at speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. KDDI expects the system will be ready for commercial release in October 2003 KDDI will start this service ahead of schedule and so filed registration with the Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications today. On April 1 this year, KDDI launched in major cities across Japan CDMA2000 1x, an IMT-2000 3G wireless system for the 800 MHz frequency that transmits data at speeds of up to 144 kbps.
Introduction policy for 2GHz frequency: KDDI started field tests of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in July 2000 to evaluate the system's performance. KDDI decided to move forward with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO for 2GHz frequency for IMT-2000 after the results of the tests demonstrated the system to be capable and technically mature and able to respond to the changing environment for Internet connectivity such as the spread of high-speed Internet connections such as ADSL.
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a high-speed best-effort dedicated data system that is different in system design from cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1x. From the trial service, KDDI will optimize systems and terminals for use on a corporate-wide scale and for various user environments to create a full-scale system that answers user's needs.
