KDDI And South Korea's SK Telecom Ally to Enable Users to Send and Receive Photo Images From 3G Cell Phones Between Japan and Korea |
Tokyo, May 28, 2002 - KDDI Corp., Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company and SK Telecom (Head Office; South Korea, President; Moon Son Pyo) today announced the launch of a joint multimedia e-mail service, which allows users to send and receive pictures using CDMA2000 1x third-generation cellular phones.
The service is the first mobile phone service to be offered between Japan and South Korea and allows users to send and receive e-mail and still pictures as JPEG files between CDMA2000 1x-compatible cell phones sold by SK Telecom and the camera-equipped GPS Kentia operated by KDDI. This service allows users to send each other pictures taken at live international sporting events held in Japan and Korea and to enjoy many other forms of communication. In this way, the service is expected to deepen interactions between Japan and Korea.
SK Telecom launched CDMA2000 1x services in September 2000 and in September 2001 started 'photo mail', in which images are sent by e-mail.
