KDD America Obtains License to Operate Facilities-Based International Telecommunications Business in the U.S.

NotificationDecember 4, 1997

KDD America Inc. (main office: New York, president: Hiroshi Hirai), a wholly-owned subsidiary of KDD (Japan's Global Communications), obtained on December 3 (local time) a license, granted under Article 214 of the U.S. Telecommunications Act, to provide facilities-based international telecommunications service in the United States from the Federal Communications Commission.

The license will allow KDD America to provide such facilities-based international telecommunications services as international telephone and leased circuit services between the United States and the rest of the world except for Japan. KDD America had applied for the license with the FCC on October 14 this year. This will be another facilities-based international telecommunications license acquired by a KDD group company abroad after Europe Ltd. (main office: London, president: Toshio Takahashi), which acquired a license in U.K. on September 10 this year.

KDD America will purchase circuit capacity in international optical submarine cables and combine facilities-based and resale-base operations to build an economical and efficient network.

KDD America provides Globridge*, a resale-type international leased circuit service, and TeleWeb, a store-and-forward fax service. The company is also preparing to launch in the near future a resale-type international telephone service between the United States and the rest of the world, except for Japan, for which it acquired the license on September 12 and October 3.

* Globridge service area:
United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, U.K., Germany, and France
