KDD to Launch New Domestic Telephone Services

KDD plans to launch the services on July 1, after the request is approved.

1. Domestic telephone service from subscriber telephones

KDD will commence a domestic telephone service that allows customers to place a call from a NTT subscriber telephone to anywhere in Japan by dialing 001 before the area code. No prior registration will be required to use the service.

The rates are determined by a combination of simple distance categories and three time groups (standard, discounted, and economy). As with its international telephone service, KDD will charge the customer every 6 seconds, making the domestic telephone service extremely economical as the customer pays only what they have used. This is in contrast to other domestic carriers, who calculate the call charge in units of 9 or 10 yen according to the usable time categories.

When compared to NTT's rates, for example, KDD's rates are cheaper in all distance categories exceeding 20 km. KDD's standard rate (during the day on weekdays) for a 3-minute call over a distance of more than 100 km is 69 yen, or some 23% cheaper than the 90 yen charged by NTT and long-distance NCC's.

KDD's economy rate (late nights and early mornings) is the same regardless of distance. The 30 yen charged for a 3-minute economy call is the cheapest rate in Japan for a call over a distance of more than 100 km.

  2. Commencement of discount services

  KDD will start a discount service that requires no registration fee or basic charge to make domestic telephone service as economical as possible for its customers.

  The discount service, applicable to domestic telephone calls, deducts 10% off the charges to the ten most called telephone numbers (automatically selected), when total monthly usage reaches or exceeds 300 yen. By subscribing to this service, customers can take advantage of the cheapest calls exceeding 100 km in Japan in all time groups (e.g., 62.1 yen for a 3-minute standard-rate call).

  To help its international telephone customers use its domestic telephone service more economically, KDD will also launch a package domestic-international telephone discount service. By subscribing to the package domestic-international telephone discount service, customers will enjoy additional savings from such existing international telephone discount services as YoruDoNicchi.

  The international telephone discount service portion of the package domestic-international telephone discount service will allow customers to enjoy longer economy-rate hours (late nights and early mornings), when the rates are approximately 30% lower than standard rates. Whereas the usual economy-rate hours are from 23:00 to 08:00, on weekdays, they will begin two hours earlier (21:00 - 08:00), and, on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the economy-hour rates will be applied around the clock.

  KDD will offer two types of the services according to usage amount and provide a discount for each time group when the service is used.

  Type II (name is subject to change) offers, for example, besides the advantages of combining KDD Family Talk and YoruDoNicchi for international telephone, the following benefits:

  1. No basic charge
  2. Economy-hour discount destinations for international calls are increased from 1 to all destinations
  3. Standard-hour discount telephone numbers for international calls are increased from the top five to all telephone numbers.

  These greater discounts will provide KDD's customers with more ways to save even more on their telephone bills.

  Type I (name is subject to change) When monthly charge reaches or exceeds 300 yen ;

  • 10% discount off the charges incurred during day and evening hours (08:00 - 21:00)
  • 25% discount off the charges incurred during economy hours (21:00 - 08:00) and around the clock on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays.

  Type II (name is subject to change) When monthly charge reaches or exceeds 1,000 yen ;

  • 12% discount off the charges incurred during day and evening hours (08:00 - 21:00)
  • For charges incurred during economy hours (21:00 - 08:00) and around the clock on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
    • 12% discount off the first 6,000 yen or less in charges
    • 40% discount off the charges in excess of the first 6,000 yen

  3. Revision of terms of providing domestic telephone service by Route KDD

  KDD will make changes to domestic telephone service using Route KDD. The company will launch a domestic telephone service for calls originated from general subscriber telephones and terminated by Route KDD telephones. The carrier will also adapt a rates schedule according to distance and time group to make the service even more economical.

  KDD has provided, since July last year, a domestic telephone service originating from Route KDD telephones and a domestic public telephone service from IC global phones, and since February this year, a domestic telephone service using KDD Super World Card, a prepaid telephone card.

  KDD anticipates that the introduction of the new domestic telephone services will allow a greater number of customers to take advantage of its high-quality and inexpensive international and domestic telephone services.
