A grand inauguration ceremony of the Surabaya-Ujungpandang-Banjarmasin Fiber-Optic Cable System linking three major islands (Java, Sulawesi and Kalimantan) in Indonesia-was held on May 31, at 9 a.m., local time (May 31, at 11 a.m., Japan time) in the presence of Minister of Transportation and Communication, related Governor and other attendants.

The submarine cable system has been actualized with the fund by the World Bank, constructed by the consortium made up of KDD Submarine Cable Systems Inc. (KDD-SCS) (President: Yasuhiko Niiro) and TOMEN Corporation (President: Akihiro Tsuji) which won the approx. 6.8 billion yen contract with PT. TELKOM (Indonesia's largest domestic telecommunications carrier) in September 1996 as a result of the international competitive bidding.

The construction works, overcoming difficulties such as mine survey and mine clearance along the cable route from Surabaya to Ujungpandang, goods delivery and land cable installation, were completed in March this year beating the schedule and were highly valued by PT. TELKOM.

The system extends 2,200km in total length and has a transmission capacity of 5G bit/s (approx. 60,000 simultaneous voice circuits in terms of 64k bit/s equivalents), employing OS-A 5G System, a state-of-the-art, high-quality optical cable system developed by KDD Corporation, and assuring high reliability with a designed life of 25 years.

This large capacity transmission system linking major islands of Indonesia will bring considerable improvements in the quality of telephone, data communications, Internet and other telecommunications services as a communication infrastructure to the entire country, where further boost of demand is expected.

KDD Submarine Cable Systems Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of KDD, is a leading supplier of state-of-the-art submarine cable systems around the world including total turnkey supplies, quality assurance, engineering and other business since its establishment in May, 1992.

Tomen Corporation, the seventh largest sogo shosha (trading company) in Japan, has contracted various kinds of projects as telecommunication, power production, chemical refinery and gas/oil mining all over the world since its establishment in 1920.
