In the field of "Multimedia Applications", KDDI is working to develop elemental technologies to improve convenience for users. These include content mining technology that can comb through mountains of data to find content of value to users and highly accurate voice recognition and synthesis. In addition, KDDI is striving to meet market needs by bringing into practical use integrated terminals that support communications and broadcasting services, fuel cell batteries and other innovative technologies.

In the field of "Next Generation Mobile Communications", KDDI is working on R&D for not only the current third-genreration mobile phones, but also new wireless systems utilizing the next-generation CDMA2000 wireless protocol and IEEE 802.16e (mobile WiMAX), and advanced wireless systems to support the era of "Ultra 3G" combined fixed/mobile network that includes wired access such as ADSL and FTTH. R&D subjects in this field include quality assurance technology that enables development of wireless broadband systems and differentiation of services as well as seamless handover technology that allows continuous communication with different access media.

In the field of "Ubiquitous Communications", KDDI is engaged in R&D for the realization of environments in which users can obtain secure service at any time in any place. These technologies include distributed content management technology that provides free and secure content distribution and characteristic analysis technology that enables the provision of services adapted to individual tastes and behaviors.

In the field of "Broadband Access and Network Infrastructure", KDDI is engaged in R&D towards construction of the "NGN [1]" integrated next-generation IP network that seamlessly and flexibly combines mobile and fixed networks and the "MMD [2]" control platform compatible with multimedia services. In order to provide secure, high-quality networks, KDDI also performs multifaceted R&D on the overall operation and management of networks and on design, control, and management technology for ultrahigh-speed largescale networks. In addition, KDDI carries out research that will contribute to the spread of FTTH.
