au WALLET Card applications surpass 10 million mark!

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular announce that on February 24, 2015, the number of total number of au WALLET Card applications surpassed the 10 million mark.
Since beginning taking applications on May 8, 2014, a great number of customers have applied for the au WALLET Card and it has become the fastest [1] au service to reach the 10 million mark.

In commemoration of surpassing the 10 million mark, from March 6, 2015, KDDI is holding a Big Thank You Fair to show customers their appreciation by offering a campaign where customers receive ¥500 for charging their card, another campaign where customers earn extra points by shopping at Seven-Eleven or Amazon, and more.

KDDI will continue working to expand au WALLET services by holding special campaigns and expanding point advantage stores so that customers can experience daily convenience and money savings.

RICHMEDIA, a portfolio company of KDDI Open Innovation Fund also participates in au WALLET points program. Customers can earn WALLET points at RICHMEDIA's Kamimado service where customers can make reservations at over 8,000 beauty salons and nail salons nationwide.

au WALLET Card overview

Change in number of applications
The total number of au WALLET Cards reached the 10 million mark at a pace of 1 card about every 2.5 seconds since beginning taking applications on May 8, 2014.

Users
Use of the card does not require an approval process and there are no annual membership charges. Because of this, customers of a wide range of ages, including those who do not have a credit card, are using the card daily. Since this is a prepaid card that can be used in a wide variety of stores without the worry of overuse, a number of users have informed us that they use the card in place of cash.
Also, many customers are using the card together with the au WALLET app since it allows them to check their remaining balance and charge their card easily.

Use in stores
While cards are being mostly used in stores with a high frequency of visitors, such as major nationwide convenience stores and supermarkets, they are also being used in a wide range of other stores, such as restaurants and home electronics stores.
The habit of using the au WALLET Card to pay for shopping in a wide range of amounts and earn points is gradually penetrating amongst users. Payment amounts range from a few hundred yen, which can be a hassle when paying with coins, to tens of thousands of yen.
Also, point advantage stores are expanding focusing on stores that are familiar to customers. Since more points than normal can be earned, there is a trend of more customers using their cards.

From the viewpoint of overuse and security, the number of customers using au WALLET Card for net shopping has increased with a focus on customers who had reservations about using credit cards for net shopping.

au WALLET

au WALLET Card is a new prepaid card that can be charged and used to shop in approximately 38.1 million stores that accept MasterCard (R) worldwide such as convenience stores, drug stores, restaurants, apparel stores, amusement facilities, and online stores.
Using the au WALLET Card earns 1 point for per yen, the card can be charged for use the next time you go shopping. Also, with the au WALLET app, you can easily check your remaining balance and charge the card.

Point advantage stores

KDDI has partnered with various companies to create point advantage stores so that customers can enjoy even more shopping using their au WALLET Cards. At point advantage stores, customers can earn more WALLET points than they would at normal stores. KDDI has partnered with 7 new companies, and as of March 6, 2015, 32 companies and approximately 24,000 stores are point advantage stores. KDDI will continue expanding point advantage stores.
