Use of KDDI Global IP-VPN and KDDI Application Optimization Service to inexpensively achieve visibility, optimization, and acceleration of photograph transmission from an international event to Japan
Kyodo News distributes news from Japan and the rest of the world to Japan's major news outlets and overseas media organizations. With news provided in Japanese, English, and Chinese, Kyodo News is a focal point of comprehensive international news agencies representing Japan in Asia.
At an overseas international event held in the summer of 2012, Kyodo News undertook the challenge to send press photographs back to Japan faster than any other organization. KDDI supported this mission with the KDDI Application Optimization Service. No trouble occurred during the event, and the service inexpensively achieved visibility, optimization, and acceleration of photograph transmission.

Challenge 1Initially we intended to construct a dedicated line, but it did not suit the local network and interface provided by the event organizers, and it was clear that a dedicated line would be expensive.
Proposal and effect of introduction
KDDI Global IP-VPN
The secure, high-quality photograph transmission demanded by the customer was achieved using the KDDI Global IP-VPN full-mesh global network.
Challenge 2With IP-VPN, which in principle may experience more transmission delays than a dedicated line, the challenge was how to accelerate the transmission speed.
Proposal and effect of introduction
KDDI Application Optimization Service
Transmission delays were overcome by using the KDDI Application Optimization Service, which achieves visibility, optimization, and acceleration by identifying the traffic volume of individual applications used on the network.
Challenge 3This was the first time for us to use IP-VPN at a high-profile international event, so we needed to perform careful simulation and testing in advance.
Proposal and effect of introduction
Simulated environment + On-site testing By creating simulated transmission delays, testing the bandwidth that was suitable for practical use, and conducting tests with incorporated application servers, we were able to thoroughly fine-tune the system at the site.

Choosing KDDI Global IP-VPN's secure,
high-quality full-mesh global network as an alternative to a dedicated line
Kyodo News is a general incorporated association engaged in the wide distribution of fair and accurate domestic and international news, with the aim of promoting international mutual understanding while serving the public's right of access to information. Business activities consist of gathering, editing and distributing domestic and international news, photographs, and video to support news coverage at Japan's newspaper publishers, television and radio news organizations, and many media departments, making it a central player in the Japanese media industry.
At an international event held in the summer of 2012, Kyodo News undertook the challenge to transmit real press photographs back to Japan from a special booth set up in the press center, faster than any other organization. The initial plan was to use a dedicated line, which would provide the highest level of stability and speed, but the on-site network and interface provided by the event organizers was not appropriate, and it became clear that a substantial financial investment in equipment would be required in order to execute that plan. In response, KDDI proposed the use of KDDI Global IP-VPN's secure, high-quality full-mesh global network, which was selected as the solution. Additionally, in terms of cost performance, which is an important consideration when setting up a network for a short-term event, KDDI Global IP-VPN scores a clear advantage over the construction of a dedicated line.
Incorporating KDDI Application Optimization Service to successfully boost transmission speed
"IP-VPN is generally slower than a dedicated line in terms of transmission speed," says Shimamoto. "In addition, there is a transmission delay of 200 milliseconds round-trip between Western Europe and Tokyo. We were also concerned that there would be further substantial delays at the application level." For these reasons, KDDI proposed the use of KDDI Application Optimization Service . The installation of optimization equipment at both ends, before the application servers, optimizes data transfer and achieves greater speed. In addition, the data transfer status can be monitored in real-time by accessing a web portal on a central server on KDDI's backbone network. This innovative service makes it possible to identify the traffic volume of individual applications used on the network, which helps to achieve visibility, optimization and acceleration. In cases where data transfer ordinarily takes about 20 seconds with IP-VPN by itself, the transfer time with KDDI Application Optimization Service is cut in half, to about 10 seconds. In addition, even when there was a transfer delay, performance could be improved to 7 MB per session, up from 4 MB per session. Kyodo News recognized this optimization service as an inexpensive way to achieve the performance similar to that of a dedicated line service, which led to its adoption.
- As of 2012, this service is available as a basic function of the KDDI Global IP-VPN service (visibility/optimization).
Despite the risks associated with introducing a system for the first time at a large-scale international event, repeated simulations and on-site testing resulted in trouble-free success
Even with methods that are problem-free in theory, there are still many factors that remain unknown until actual testing is performed. Consequently, KDDI performed careful simulations in Japan before testing at the event site. For example, testing was performed with simulated transfer delays, and with the actual application servers incorporated into the system. KDDI sent a team of system engineers to work with the Kyodo News team on the test operations, which were conducted for about two weeks. Shimamoto, who was present at the site one month before the event, says, "I can't say that I was not worried. We needed a reasonable amount of time to fine-tune the system at the site. But thanks to the testing, no major incidents such as network failures occurred during the event period, and there was no delay trouble. This was our first such experience, and we kept checking the transfer status on the monitor and reacting excitedly to all the ups and downs of the event. Overall, it was a valuable experience with a mix of excitement and tension. Considering the environmental constraints at the site and the short construction period, I think we made the absolute best choice."
When asked for an overall evaluation of KDDI for this project, Shimamoto replied, "I was delighted with the sales team and with the fact that KDDI provided solid support with their own technicians." This case serves as a prime example of KDDI's ability to propose and implement system integration solutions.
To create faster, more stable, and more cost-effective systems
In response to recent economic conditions and trends in network construction, customer demand for measures such as cost reduction and use of outside resources are growing stronger every day, even at KDDI. However, our policy is never to compromise on quality. The project described here serves as a good example of striking a perfect balance between quality and cost. In the future, we will continue to construct temporary networks at various types of events, as well as between branch offices and affiliates, and we will pursue new methods and technologies without being constrained by conventional thinking.
