Jibun Bank Corporation, a joint venture between KDDI and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, is pleased to announce that it obtained a banking license on June 17, 2008.

As a "personal (jibun) bank for each individual customer," Jibun Bank Corporation will strive to become the best rewarded financial institution with full of customer's satisfaction by maximizing the unique features of mobile handsets and providing high-quality financial services that balance convenience and security.

Jibun Bank expects to start accepting applications for accounts in the middle of July, 2008

3. Business details

(1) When operations are launched, yen-deposits (ordinary and time) and payment services, such as transfers will be available, as a general rule, 365 days a year 24 hours a day through three channels - mobile (au, NTT DoCoMo, and Softbank - three mobile communications carriers), Internet (personal computers), and telephone (IVR/operator). After launching operations, services will gradually be expanded to include foreign currency deposits, credit cards, credit card loans, financial products intermediation and sales of insurance.

(2) For customers using au mobile handsets, special services and campaigns will be available through the convenience provided "only by mobile handsets."

  • Services that make use of the characteristics of mobile phones such as 'mobile phone number transfers', which use the mobile phone number of the counterparty to designate the destination of a transfer, and 'mobile phone bank book', which adds functions such as bank book and simple household account book to mobile phones
  • Cashless services such as 'Jibun Bank payment', which make it possible to simply and rapidly pay for EZweb-based shopping and auctions and to charge electronic money over the phone.
  • A campaign that increases the number of au points [1] awarded based on the amount spent simply by tying the payment of au charges to the Jibun Bank account.

(3) Transfers between two Jibun Bank accounts or between a Jibun Bank account and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ account are free of charge [2]. In addition, deposits and withdrawals can be made at partner financial institutions including Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and Seven Bank.

(4) KDDI and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ will offer new accounts and provide information on Jibun Bank's products and services to their customers as an agent of Jibun Bank, which the FSA license was conditioned on.

  • [1] It is possible to use points awarded based on the amount of monthly au charges for various purposes including purchasing au services and changes models.
  • [2] This is limited to individual customers. In addition transfers made at bank counters at the head office and branches of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, cash transactions using ATMs, or telephone (operator) transactions are not covered.
  • * It is expected that KDDI will provide guidance on opening Jibun Bank accounts through au mobile handsets and EZweb, will advertise through the au comprehensive catalogue and TV commercials, and will dispatch staff to au shops to solicit new accounts. Jibun Bank accounts are expected to be solicited at the bank counters and ATM corners of the around 670 Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ headquarters and branch offices.
