Launch of Satellite IP Service, "KDD Skycast"
- Service for intranet/extranet
that uses first in Japan satellite circuits
for both transmission and reception -

[Press Release 1999-020] April 19, 1999

KDD will launch, starting in this autumn, a two-way satellite communications service, "KDD Skycast" that enables an intranet/extranet to be constructed efficiently at a low cost. KDD Skycast is the first IP transmission service in Japan that provides both transmitting and receiving circuits via a satellite.

KDD Skycast is a satellite service that realizes, by installing on the customer's premises an very small earth station equipped with transmitting and receiving functions (VSAT: Very Small Aperture Terminal with an antenna aperture of 75 cm Note 1), broadcasting of large-volume data to multiple locations by means of the high-speed IP transmission and IP multicast. The service provides a maximum transmission speed of 150 kbps between VSATs and KDD Hub Station Note 2, and a maximum receiving speed of 2Mpbs, by achieving efficiently the time-division sharing of a receiving circuit and plural transmitting circuits between VSATs. Other satellite Internet services provided at present require the installation of terrestrial circuits via ISDN or the frame relay, because VSAT's used in these services are of receiving-only type. KDD Skycast eliminates the need of terrestrial circuits by adding the transmission function to VSATs, thus enabling the construction of an efficient and low-cost intranet/extranet.

With KDD Skycast, customers can realize economically the pull-type information transfer from the server by multiple clients and the push type information distribution, etc., to multiple clients from the server, by taking advantage of the features specific to satellite communications - wide area connectivity, multiple access capability and distribution capability.

VANFU Co., Ltd. (Main office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President: Shunsuke Inukai) and CORAY CORPORATION (Main office: Yokohama-shi, Kanagawa-ken; President: Fumihito Tsuchiya) are expected to use the service. KDD will do its best as ever to meet customers' versatile needs for communications by providing various types of IP service including KDD Skycast.

1. Examples of use
1) Multicast transmission and reception of large-volume data such as fine images, video and music;
2) Construction of high-speed and large-volume pre-press networks Note 3 with the printing industry in perspective;
3) Construction of an intranet/extranet between/among nation-wide points of sales for convenience stores, gas stations, automobile sales companies, etc.;
2. Service types and rate system
Two types of service, "Usage volume type service" and "Dedicated use type service" (provisional service name: Skycast GS) are planned. Communications charges for either of these services are not dependent on the number of VSATs, the number of destinations, or the distance for communications.
Charges (provisional) are as shown in the attachment.
1) Dedicated use type service: for customers with a lot of business bases and large volume of data transmitted;
2) Usage volume type service: for customers with relatively small volume of data transmitted.
3. Technical support service
KDD's fully owned subsidiary, KDD Technology Inc. (Main office: Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshiharu Saito) provides, at the request from customers, technical supports relating to the collection and distribution of contents to customers.

[Reference 3] Glossary

Note 1 VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal)
: Very small satellite communications earth station that sends and receives radio-waves via an antenna with a small-sized aperture.
Note 2 KDD Hub Station
: Relatively large-sized earth station that, installed in KDD Network Service Center, communicates with VSATs via a satellite.
Note 3 Pre-press network
: Network for the printing industry, that is designed for transmitting large volume character and image data
Note 4 IDU (In Door Unit)
: In Door Unit part included in VSAT station equipment
