KDDI Open Innovation Fund III Invests in SpaceData Inc., Developer of AI That Automatically Generates Digital Twin of Earth from Satellite Data

August 3, 2022

KDDI Corporation

On August 3, 2022, KDDI invested in SpaceData Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Katsuaki Sato; hereinafter: "SpaceData"), a developer of AI technology that automatically generates a digital twin of Earth from satellite data, through KDDI Open Innovation Fund III (operated by Global Brain Corporation; hereinafter "KOIF III"), which aims to incubate new business co-creations with promising venture startups.

SpaceData is developing AI technology that automatically generates a virtual world that accurately represents the real world in virtual space, using satellite data and 3DCG technology. Machine learning is performed using static ground images and altitude data obtained from satellites, so that the structures on the ground can be automatically detected, categorized, and reconstructed. The AI then automatically generates a 3D model of the ground, and 3DCG technology is used to automatically reproduce the fine details of materials such as rocks, metal, plants, and glass. Since machine learning is performed using satellite data to ensure that the system understands the significance (object type, shape, color, material, height, width, role, and other characteristics) of each structure on the ground before converting the data back to a 3D model, it is possible to reproduce objects in fine detail without degrading the resolution, even when viewed at close range in virtual space.

Through this investment, KDDI will support the expansion of SpaceData's platform and promote the development of new businesses that utilize XR and digital twins, by actively using 3D models that are automatically generated by SpaceData's AI in KDDI's XR-related business operations.

As "the company that customers feel closest to," KDDI will continue to promote business co-creation through investment in promising startup companies, and create new business models together with customers and partners.

  • ■ About SpaceData Inc.
SpaceData is a space-related startup that conducts research and development in three core areas of satellite data, AI technology, and 3DCG technology. Although the universe is generally thought to be an unknown physical space, SpaceData believes that the universe is an object that can be created by using technology. Under the premise that the essence of the universe is information (data) rather than physical matter, the company vision embraces the notion that human beings can create a new universe with technology.
