AI R&D and Utilization Principles for KDDI Group

Purpose of the Principles

  • Respecting international trends, KDDI Group will promote the R&D and utilization of AI, thereby enhancing customer experience value.
  • These principles are in line with the "Basic Policy for Data Utilization" that aims to ensure customers can confidently use KDDI Group's services.
  • KDDI Group aims to create a resilient society through the "KDDI Accelerate 5.0", a concept that balances the establishment of new lifestyles for consumers and the resolution of economic development and social issues in Japan. "KDDI Accelerate 5.0" describes that information collected on cyberspace platform and analyzed by AI will influence the physical space to build a more prosperous society. KDDI Group will contribute to the coming AI society by demonstrating that it will make AI safe to use and that it will be used in a way that customers and society can feel safe.

Principles

KDDI Group shall observe the following principles when becoming AI developers, AI users or AI data providers.

[1] Principle of human dignity and individual autonomy

  • AI developers and AI users should respect human dignity and individual autonomy in the R&D and utilization of AI systems or AI services.

[2] Principles of proper utilization, user assistance and data quality

  • AI users should make efforts to utilize AI systems or AI services in proper scope and manner, under the proper assignment of roles between humans and AI systems or among AI users.
  • AI developers should take into consideration that AI systems will support users and make it possible to give them opportunities for choice in appropriate manners.
  • AI users and AI data providers should pay attention to the quality of data used by AI systems for learning and methods other than learning.

[3] Principles of controllability and human intervention

  • AI developers should pay attention to the controllability of AI systems.
  • AI users are expected to allow the intervention of human decisions, if necessary and possible, as to whether or not to use the AI’s decision and how to use it.

[4] Principles of safety and security

  • AI developers and AI users should take into consideration that AI systems or AI services will not harm the life, body, or property of users or third parties through actuators or other devices.
  • AI developers, AI users and AI data providers should pay attention to the security of AI systems or AI services.

[5] Principles of privacy

  • AI developers, AI users and AI data providers should take into consideration that AI systems will not infringe the privacy of users or third parties.

[6] Principles of fairness

  • AI developers, AI users and AI data providers should pay attention to the possibility of bias inherent in the judgements made by AI systems or AI services, and take into consideration that individuals and groups will not be unfairly discriminated by such judgements.

[7] Principles of transparency

  • AI developers and AI users should pay attention to the verifiability of inputs/outputs of AI systems or AI services and the explainability of their judgments.

[8] Principles of accountability

  • AI developers and AI users should make efforts to fulfill their accountability to stakeholders.

[9] Principles of collaboration

  • AI developers, AI users and AI data providers should pay attention to the risks that might occur and even be amplified when AI systems or AI services are to be collaborated and networked.

These principles will be constantly reviewed and flexibly revised as necessary based on the technological innovations of AI systems and AI services, as well as on international trends.
